Unveiling the Hidden Threat: Methamphetamine's Impact on Australian Properties

Updated: Dec 4, 2023

A house in threat- Methamphetamine's Impact

The current Ice or Meth (methamphetamine) use nationwide in Australia is causing devastating effects.

Not only socially, but also within the property industry.

This might not be something you would have ever thought would be relevant when looking at moving into your new home be it purchasing or a new rental property.

Due to the increasing demand for the drug, it has driven more and more people to manufacture it. Many residential dwellings are now being turned into illegal drug laboratories.

This is where the danger lies.

What's the highest-risk property?

Older residences are more inclined to be used rather than those of newer construction.

Meth leaves a legacy of toxic chemicals. This is not only from manufacturing the substances but also use of it by an occupant within the premises. Contamination requires proper specialist cleaning to detoxify any contaminant.

REINSW suggests that up to 1% of the houses in NSW are impacted. This could mean 1 house in every street is potentially contaminated.

The highest instances have been those of rental premises. This means that any non-new property could potentially be contaminated with meth. This doesn’t discount the fact that any property, even those in the up-market areas, has been used as labs. No area is safe from the existence of meth labs.

The Gold Coast and Northern Rivers area has seen several instances of rental properties being used as meth labs in recent times.

Rural properties can also be of higher risk as they are usually more private, away from the prying eyes of neighbours. Statistics have shown that police discover many drug labs in rural areas.

When purchasing property, it is the buyer who is at risk to ensure they are getting what they bargained for.

How can I tell if my house is contaminated?

The signs of contamination of any sort aren’t always visible. There are companies available who can attend the premises and provide you with a clinical report within a few days. This test can cost anywhere up to $500. There are also self-testing kits available if you are unsure or have any doubts regarding your property.

But can you put a price on your family’s health?
